About the Peruvian Sol.
Where it comes from
Introduced by Peru's Central Reserve Bank in 1991, the nuevo sol replaced the inti at a million intis per sol after years of hyperinflation. Congress dropped the "nuevo" in 2015, so the currency is now simply the sol, a name that also means "sun" in Spanish.
Good to know
The inti it replaced was named for the Inca sun god and lasted only six years, so the sol kept the solar theme in the family. Since 1991 the currency has been among the steadiest anywhere in Latin America, holding inflation around 1.5 percent, the lowest in the region.
