About the Hungarian Forint.
Where it comes from
Hungary's forint, issued by the Hungarian National Bank, arrived on 1 August 1946 to replace the pengő, which hyperinflation had made worthless. The name is much older, borrowed from Florence's fiorino d'oro gold coin, a model Hungarian kings had copied since 1325.
Good to know
The pengő it replaced suffered the most severe hyperinflation ever recorded. In June 1946 Hungary printed a 100 quintillion pengő note, a one followed by twenty zeros, still the highest-denomination banknote ever put into circulation. At the changeover, one forint bought 400 octillion pengő.
