Hungary's forint, issued by the Hungarian National Bank, arrived on 1 August 1946 to replace the pengő, which hyperinflation had made worthless. The name is much older, borrowed from Florence's fiorino d'oro gold coin, a model Hungarian kings had copied since 1325.
