About the South African Rand.
Where it comes from
South Africa introduced the rand in 1961, three months before declaring itself a republic, replacing the pound at two rand per pound. The name comes from the Witwatersrand, the gold-bearing ridge Johannesburg sits on (rand is Afrikaans for ridge). The South African Reserve Bank issues it.
Good to know
Rand banknotes have carried the Big Five game animals since the 1990s; from 6 November 2012 Nelson Mandela's portrait has shared the notes with them. The currency also does duty abroad: Lesotho, Namibia and Eswatini peg their own money to the rand at one to one.
