South Africa introduced the rand in 1961, three months before declaring itself a republic, replacing the pound at two rand per pound. The name comes from the Witwatersrand, the gold-bearing ridge Johannesburg sits on (rand is Afrikaans for ridge). The South African Reserve Bank issues it.
