Where it comes from
Uzbekistan left the ruble zone with a transitional som-coupon in November 1993, then the Central Bank of Uzbekistan launched the permanent som on 1 July 1994, dropping three zeros at 1,000 old som per new one. The name comes from a Turkic word meaning pure.
Good to know
The som's big moment came on 5 September 2017, when President Shavkat Mirziyoyev scrapped the dollar peg and let it float; the official rate jumped overnight from 4,210 to 8,100 per dollar. Inflation kept pushing denominations up, and a 200,000 som note arrived in July 2022.
