Where it comes from
The peso traces back to Spanish colonial coinage, and the first Philippine banknotes were issued in 1852 by El Banco Español Filipino. A central bank took over in 1949 and was reorganized in 1993 as the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, which issues the currency today.
Good to know
In 2005 a batch of 100-peso notes printed in France spelled the president's name as Gloria Macapagal-Arrovo instead of Arroyo. Central bank employees spotted the error when they withdrew their own salaries from ATMs, and the misprinted notes are still legal tender.
