Bank Al-Maghrib, Morocco's central bank, introduced the dirham in 1960, a few years after independence from France. It replaced the Moroccan franc, which did not vanish overnight: francs kept circulating alongside the new money until 1974, at 100 francs to the dirham.

Iraq introduced the dinar in 1932, replacing the Indian rupee that British administrators had brought in during World War I, at one dinar to 11 rupees. The Central Bank of Iraq issues it today; the current note series dates from the 2003 currency swap.
