Introduced in 1872, when British Ceylon swapped sterling for a rupee of 100 cents, valued then at two shillings and three pence. It was called the Ceylon rupee until 1972, when the island became Sri Lanka, and today it is issued by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

The Reserve Bank of India has issued the rupee since 1935, but the name is far older: Sher Shah Suri minted a silver rupiya of about 11.5 grams during his rule between 1540 and 1545. The modern rupee was decimalised into 100 paise in 1957.
