Where it comes from
Kazakhstan's National Bank has issued the tenge since November 1993, when Russia's ruble reform pushed former Soviet republics off the old currency at short notice. It replaced Soviet-era rubles at 500 to one, and the first notes were printed in the UK while Kazakhstan built its own printing works.
Good to know
Tenge notes keep winning beauty contests. The International Bank Note Society named a Kazakh note banknote of the year three times in a row (2011, 2012, 2013). The 2013 win, for a commemorative 1,000 tenge note, came after the closest vote the society had seen, edging out Canada and Fiji.
