Iceland adopted the króna in 1874, replacing the Danish rigsdaler while the island was still under Danish rule. The Central Bank of Iceland issues it today. The modern króna dates to 1981, when inflation forced a revaluation that swapped 100 old krónur for one new one.

Denmark's krone arrived on 1 January 1875, replacing the rigsdaler at two kroner per rigsdaler and putting the country on the gold standard within the Scandinavian Monetary Union alongside Sweden and Norway. Danmarks Nationalbank has issued it ever since, and the name means crown.
