Three commercial banks, HSBC, Standard Chartered, and Bank of China, print Hong Kong's banknotes under the Hong Kong Monetary Authority's oversight. A 1935 ordinance made the dollar the territory's official unit after decades of mixed foreign coinage, and since 1983 it has been pegged at HK$7.80 to the US dollar.

The Central Bank of Brazil introduced the real on 1 July 1994, replacing the cruzeiro real at 2,750 to one as part of the Plano Real stabilisation plan. Hyperinflation had burned through Brazil's money names; the real was the country's fifth currency in just eight years.
