Switzerland's first Federal Coinage Act introduced the franc in 1850, replacing a mess of cantonal coins. By one estimate some 8,000 different coins and notes circulated beforehand. The Swiss National Bank has issued the banknotes since 1907, when it took over from the cantons and private banks.

The Czech koruna appeared in 1993, after Czechoslovakia dissolved and its shared currency had to be split between the two new states. Issued by the Czech National Bank, it replaced the Czechoslovak koruna that year, alongside a fresh set of coins from 10 haléřů up to 50 korun.
