Bangladesh introduced the taka on 4 March 1972, a few months after winning independence, replacing the Pakistani rupee at par. Bangladesh Bank issues notes of 10 taka and above, while the finance ministry puts out the small 2 and 5 taka notes. The name comes from the Sanskrit tanka, a silver coin.

Pakistan kept using Indian rupees overprinted with Government of Pakistan right after the 1947 partition, then issued its own rupee once the State Bank of Pakistan opened in 1948. The State Bank still issues it today, and the currency was decimalised into 100 paisa in 1961.
