Bangladesh introduced the taka on 4 March 1972, a few months after winning independence, replacing the Pakistani rupee at par. Bangladesh Bank issues notes of 10 taka and above, while the finance ministry puts out the small 2 and 5 taka notes. The name comes from the Sanskrit tanka, a silver coin.

The Reserve Bank of India has issued the rupee since 1935, but the name is far older: Sher Shah Suri minted a silver rupiya of about 11.5 grams during his rule between 1540 and 1545. The modern rupee was decimalised into 100 paise in 1957.
