The dirham arrived on 19 May 1973, less than two years after the UAE formed. It replaced the Qatar and Dubai riyal at par in most emirates and the Bahraini dinar in Abu Dhabi, and has been issued by the Central Bank of the UAE since 1980.

Bank Al-Maghrib, Morocco's central bank, introduced the dirham in 1960, a few years after independence from France. It replaced the Moroccan franc, which did not vanish overnight: francs kept circulating alongside the new money until 1974, at 100 francs to the dirham.
